“Language is the presentation of the absent.”

Language is a truly peculiar skill because, doubtless, we can say whatever we want – and, by so doing, we can bring the past or the future right into the centre of the present and vice versa. We can, for example, say ‘it is raining at the moment’, even if the sun is shining. And this is not a lie because language has its own realm of existence.

Which is, admittedly, very problematic, especially in the light of fake news and false representations of politics and history. Language itself can do what it wants – although it is clear that language always needs a speaker.

Hence, the ones who talk are the problem. But only when they lay claim to the truth with what they are saying. This needs another form of verification.

Either way: the freedom of speech is simply wonderful.
