The true republic: men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.

Men’s rights already existed which is o.k. That’s why they certainly don’t need to be granted additional benefits or privileges. Women, on the contrary, must be particularly highlighted because their claim for ‘nothing less’ (referring to men’s rights) still had to be fought hard for. Thus, in this gender context the apparently opposite words ‘more’ and ‘less’ are egalitarian and of same value. Susan Brownell Anthony was one of the most visible leaders of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States. For all her life she was fighting for a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote. In 1872, she was arrested for voting.

Besides: The composer Virgil Thomson and the writer Gertrude Stein created the wonderful opera ‘The Mother of Us All’. With this opera they erected a memorial in Anthony’s honour, the leader of the fight for women’s suffrage in the United States. The world premiere took place in May 1947 – 10 months after Stein’s death.
