If what we call order actually produces permanent chaos, then one can only favour chaos in the hope that it will provide a new, open and meaningful kind of order.
Members of the DADA movement and also Kurt Schwitters already pointed out that they did not produce disorder. Instead they opposed the existing disorder with an open form of new order. One could have called that chaos, however chaos with a completely different set of rules: with DADA and, especially in the case of Schwitters, there was a method to the chaos. Therefore, one should no longer translate chaos as a ‘yawning void’ – unless one regards yawning as optimism.
