Memory is the only paradise from which we cannot be driven.

This sounds hopeful (albeit in a slightly melancholic-nostalgic sense) and one is tempted to unreservedly agree with this statement. But, the concept of memory seems to be a bit more complicated. Memories – comparable to dreams – are composed of the residues of empirical experiences and of desires or projections. We like to paint our own history in more beautiful or interesting and somehow more cheerful colours, we gild it, although we recognise and must regularly experience that, from time to time, memories effect sadness and depression, or bring back unhappy events. Furthermore: there are certain people – and sometimes that may include us all – who fundamentally, or at least occasionally, wish to be driven from this ‘paradise’ of memories.
